About eFileMaine
eFileMaine is the platform attorneys and parties use to electronically file (eFile) documents and perform other tasks online in court cases where eFiling is available.
Is eFiling Required?
- eFiling is never required for self-represented parties filing emergency cases.
- What is an “emergency case?" An emergency case is a protection from abuse or harassment requests, mental health requests, requests for emergency guardianship of a minor, and three-party child protection petitions.
- eFiling is required for self-represented parties only if they file more than six non-emergency cases in a year in family matters and civil cases.
- eFiling is required for attorneys.
- eFiling is required for governmental agencies for most cases.

- Family matters (divorce, parental rights and responsibilities, child support,
post-judgment motions, adoptions, guardianship, and name changes) - Child protection
- Small claims
- Forcible entry and detainer (evictions)
- Foreclosures
- Protection from abuse
- Protection from harassment
- Other civil matters except for civil violations

- Criminal cases (coming to Lewiston District Court and Androscoggin County Superior Court in March 2025)

Before using eFileMaine
- Attend a live, online training session or recorded session. See the Trainings & Resources page.
- Read and understand the Maine Rules of Electronic Court Systems (MRECS) and Administrative Order JB-20-03 because they govern eFiling.
- Review the User Guides & Documentation on the Trainings & Resources page.
- Determine what type of account you need (law firm administrator or individual filer).
Law Firms
Law firm administrators must setup and register their law firm first, then add individual attorneys. A firm administrator does not need to be an attorney. Firms may have more than one firm administrator.
Individual Filers
eFileMaine users must register for an account and provide an email address to be used for eService, provide account payment details or an exemption from paying filing fees, and agree to Terms of Use.
